The 75-year-old monarch, who ascended to the throne in September 2022 after the passing of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, underwent surgery for a benign prostate condition in January, only to be diagnosed with an unrelated cancer thereafter. Despite postponing public-facing duties to focus on treatment, he remains engaged in behind-the-scenes work and has conducted some in-person meetings.<\/p>\n
\u201cI have been most deeply touched by your wonderfully kind and thoughtful good wishes for my health,\u201d King Charles said in a pre-recorded speech commemorating the 75th anniversary of the Commonwealth. \u201cIn return, I can only continue to serve you, to the best of my ability, throughout the Commonwealth.\u201d<\/p>\n
With Queen Camilla, 76, and son Prince William, 41, assuming most of the royal family\u2019s duties during his absence, King Charles expressed gratitude for their support as well as for the solidarity shown by Princess Kate, 42, who has been recuperating from abdominal surgery since January.<\/p>\n
In his speech, recorded at Windsor Castle in February, King Charles lauded the diversity of the Commonwealth and urged member nations to collaborate in addressing global challenges such as climate change and economic instability.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhilst we may not all have a shared history, we have common ambitions for a better future -\u2013 working together to build resilience and respond to global challenges,\u201d he stated, emphasizing that the Commonwealth’s diversity necessitates varied responses to these challenges.<\/p>\n
