These findings signal potentially tougher rulings for the erstwhile CBN Governor.

Meriga further confirmed that the signatures on the documents were not those of former President Muhammadu Buhari and ex-Secretary General of the Federation (SGF), Boss Mustapha. Both documents, the Presidential Directive on Foreign Observer Election, and the tendered evidence of the same, were admitted into evidence by Justice Muazu.

During cross-examination by Emefiele’s counsel, Matthew Burkaa, Meriga clarified that he was not an EFCC staff and was not remunerated by the anti-graft agency, but his salary was domiciled with the Nigeria Immigration Service. Burkaa expressed dissatisfaction with the witness’s conduct, alleging evasion of questions.

Amidst the tension, Prosecution Counsel Rotimi Oyedepo and the defence counsel exchanged displeasure over the witness’s testimony.

The trial has been adjourned until March 11 for continuation. Emefiele faces a 20-count amended charge, including corrupt advantages, conspiracy, criminal breach of trust, forgery, and obtaining by false pretenses in the amount of $6,230,000. He stands accused of impersonating the SGF to unlawfully obtain the sum.

Notably, former SGF Mustapha denied the accusations in court, claiming he was not aware of the transaction until May 2023, when he left government. He stressed that the letter in question did not come from former President Buhari’s office, underscoring the case’s complexities and the gravity of the allegations against Emefiele.

The trial of former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Godwin Emefiele, continued on Thursday before Justice Hamza Muazu of the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Abuja, with significant revelations emerging from forensic analysis implicating Emefiele in the case involving a $6.2 million payment for foreign election observers.
