“When we assumed office, it was evident that the Abuja Light Rail system was non-operational. Recognizing the potential benefits of alleviating congestion in the city, President Bola Tinubu issued directives to expedite its revival within his tenure,” the minister stated.<\/p>\n
He noted that the project, managed by the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC), is now nearing completion, with an impressive 95% progress. Anticipating its inauguration in May, the minister underscored its significance in offering commuters a convenient alternative to private vehicles, facilitating travel to various destinations including the airport and surrounding area councils.<\/p>\n
In addition to the light rail, discussions are underway with private investors to modernize public transportation in Abuja. The minister acknowledged the security implications posed by the inadequate transportation system, citing unregistered operators as a concern. Efforts are underway to ensure all public transport providers are duly registered, enhancing safety and accountability.<\/p>\n
Plans are also in motion to construct designated taxi and bus terminals, offering residents a reliable and regulated means of transportation. These terminals, scheduled to commence construction in the coming month, aim to streamline commuting and enhance overall efficiency.<\/p>\n
Furthermore, discussions with relevant authorities, including the Inspector General of Police and the Department of State Services, are addressing issues such as open grazing within the city.
