At branches including GTB, Stanbic IBTC in Area 3, and Access Bank on Nyanya-Jikwoyi Road, customers expressed their urgency to comply with the directive.

William Achimogo, a civil servant and GTB customer, explained that despite the inconvenience, he visited the bank to avoid potential account blockage. “It is my salary account, and I will not want anything to affect the account so that my salary will not be withheld,” he stated.

Similarly, Aina Yakubu, a customer at Stanbic IBTC, acknowledged the looming deadline and opted to ensure compliance even though her account remained active.

The announcement of the BVN-NIN linkage deadline has prompted a rush to banks, according to Williams Ikeh, a customer of First Bank Plc, causing congestion and hindering other transactions.

Bank officials, while confirming the necessity of the linkage, highlighted its significance in maintaining active accounts. An official of Stanbic IBTC revealed that accounts yet to complete the BVN-NIN linkage would face restrictions after a grace period. However, another official at First Bank emphasized that as long as a customer’s BVN is linked to their account, there would be no cause for concern.

The urgency to link NIN and BVN stems from a circular issued by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) in 2023, mandating existing customers to complete full account profiling established through agents within the Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System. The circular stipulates that funded accounts or wallets must be placed on “post no debit or credit” status until compliance is achieved.

Customers of various banks in the Federal Capital Territory are flooding their branches to link their National Identity Number (NIN) and Bank Verification Number (BVN) to their accounts ahead of the March 1 deadline set by banks.
