Kyari highlighted the critical setback caused by the insufficient number of tractors for large-scale farming activities in Nigeria, emphasizing the need to transform agriculture into a business rather than a mere means of survival or subsistence.<\/p>\n
The minister revealed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed with John Deere, a renowned US-based agricultural equipment manufacturer. The agreement, signed in November 2023, outlines the supply of 2,000 tractors annually for the next five years. Kyari updated the House, noting that representatives from John Deere were in Lagos and scheduled to meet in Abuja to discuss the partnership further.<\/p>\n
In response to the challenges in the agricultural sector, President Bola Tinubu directed the distribution of 42,000 metric tons of assorted grains to tackle food inflation. Additionally, Kyari explained that 11,000 metric tons would be strategically stored to address uncertainties that may arise. The distribution process is being coordinated by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) in collaboration with the Office of the National Security Advisor (ONSA).<\/p>\n
Highlighting the impact of various factors on food production and prices, the minister acknowledged challenges stemming from COVID-19, flooding, the naira redesign policy, and smuggling.
