The UN has vowed to work closely with the federal government to implement this policy, describing it as the most effective way to address the nation’s multifaceted humanitarian concerns.

During a meeting with Dr. Betta Edu, the Minister for Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, a UN delegation led by Mr. Robert Piper, the Special Adviser to the United Nations Secretary-General on solutions to internal displacement, reaffirmed their commitment to pursuing long-term solutions to the country’s humanitarian issues.

Mr. Piper, who was accompanied by UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Nigeria, Matthias Schmale, underlined the importance of finding long-term solutions to Nigeria’s humanitarian issues. He praised the Minister for her fast steps, such as visiting areas with substantial humanitarian needs, and offered the UN’s support to Nigeria under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s leadership to alleviate humanitarian and poverty problems.

Mr. Piper noted that his mission in Nigeria corresponds with the UN Secretary-General’s action agenda on internal displacement and helps to underline the UN’s commitment to assisting Nigeria in areas of humanitarian need.

He commended Dr. Edu for her remarkable achievements within just three weeks of taking office, saying, “Honourable Minister, you have worked so hard in just three weeks; given what we have seen you doing, it looks as if you have been in the office for a long time, please keep it up.”

In response, Minister Edu expressed her gratitude to the UN team for their visit and kind words. However, she stressed that the separate efforts of different UN agencies operating in isolation would not yield the desired humanitarian response outcomes, given the scale and complexity of the challenges.

Minister Edu stated, “We must face reality; when humanitarian crises occur, the temptation is to offer emergency response only, hoping they will be resolved quickly, and people will return home. However, the reality on the ground is that people, in their millions, are displaced for many years, some for a decade, or even a lifetime. Instead of constructing ‘waterproof’ tarpaulin makeshift huts that may last only six months, we should provide durable solutions to resettle people in their new communities and set them on a path to economic prosperity.”

She called for a coordinated approach in alignment with the government’s vision, emphasizing that humanitarian crises are formidable challenges. She cited her recent visits to Niger, Borno, and Benue, where she witnessed the magnitude of the challenges.

Minister Edu advocated for development partners to focus on providing durable homes and sustainable solutions for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in collaboration with federal and state governments. She also mentioned the approval of the Humanitarian Trust Fund, funded through various means, including budget provisions, special allocations, taxes, support from development partners, and private sector contributions, as a significant step toward ending humanitarian crises and poverty in Nigeria.

The Minister outlined the Federal Government’s work plan for humanitarian responses, emphasizing the importance of offering durable solutions rather than simply providing food and materials to IDPs.

She concluded by noting that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu would address these issues at the upcoming United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) and stressed the urgency of providing lasting solutions to humanitarian crises and poverty in Nigeria. Also present at the meeting was the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Mr. Abel Enitan.

The United Nations has endorsed the Federal Government’s policy for resolving humanitarian problems in Nigeria.
