In the heart of Nigeria, lies the dream town of Abuja. It’s a place where many aspire to live, with promises of opportunity around every corner. But what sets this city apart for first-time visitors?<\/p>\n

Some may be struck by the city’s modern architecture, as many of the buildings and structures in Abuja were built in the 1980s and 1990s. The city was specifically designed to be the new capital of Nigeria, and was intended to be a symbol of the country’s progress and development. Others may be struck by the city’s natural beauty, as Abuja is located in the center of Nigeria and is surrounded by rolling hills and lush green forests. The Zuma Rock, located in the city’s outskirts, is a notable natural landmark. Additionally, first time visitors may be struck by the city’s cultural diversity as Abuja is home to people from many different ethnic and religious backgrounds.<\/p>\n

However, while Abuja can be a city of contrasts appearing to offer boundless chances for success, it comes at a price. Living here on a monthly income of less than N80k can be challenging. If you’re on a budget, you might find yourself residing in the outlying areas, where rents are cheaper but roads are poor.<\/p>\n

Take Kubwa, a 15-minute drive from the bustling Wuse business center. Rent here is affordable, but the roads are treacherous, and public transportation dwindles after 5.30 pm. Further on, there’s Dutse, a place with even cheaper rent but equally poor living conditions. Gwarimpa, Africa’s largest estate, is a haven for those with substantial salaries. The cost of living increases as you move closer to the city center, but strangely, there are more empty houses than people seeking homes.<\/p>\n

In Abuja, it’s not just about what you know; it’s about who you know and how you present yourself. The city values “packaging” – your appearance matters as much as your substance. This means you might find people driving expensive cars but struggling financially. In fact, looking expensive is often equated with being better.<\/p>\n

Despite the city’s opportunities, it’s tough to save money in Abuja. Many residents spend what they earn within the city, leaving little room for savings. Transportation costs can quickly add up, eating into your salary.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

One intriguing aspect of Abuja is that appearances can be deceiving. Many car owners use their vehicles as taxis to supplement their income, even if they can’t afford them. This city loves to show off.<\/p>\n

For newcomers, Abuja’s well-planned roads and infrastructure may be impressive. However, don’t assume the people match the neat surroundings. The environment might be orderly, but people’s mindsets remain diverse.<\/p>\n

One practical tip for newcomers is to have a friend show you around, or rely on Google Maps to navigate the city’s uniform road network.<\/p>\n

Despite these observations, Abuja’s organized road system and cleanliness stand out in a country known for chaotic cities. It’s a city where urban planning was followed meticulously, even if it’s a symbol of corrupt leadership.<\/p>\n

In a nutshell, Abuja is a city of grandeur, luxury, and flamboyance. It’s a great place to live if you have a good income, a fancy car, a splendid residence, and the right connections.
