While restoring and preserving the city’s master plan is critical for its long-term growth, it is also critical to scrutinise the techniques and intentions behind such programmes to ensure they truly benefit inhabitants and align with broader urban planning aims.

First and foremost, the significance of Abuja’s master plan must be recognised. The plan, developed by international specialists in the 1980s, sought to create a well-organized and aesthetically beautiful capital city. It has undoubtedly played an important part in developing Abuja’s metropolitan landscape. But with time, cities, like living things, change and adapt. Urban planning adapts to shifting demographics, demands, and economic realities rather than being static. As a result, any changes to the master plan must be deliberate, considered, and implemented with the highest level of transparency.

Worrying indications emerge from Minister Wike’s recent demolition comments, implying a potential lack of openness and due diligence. Residents and stakeholders in the FCT have voiced concerns about the murky criteria used to choose which buildings should be razed. Uncertainty causes uneasiness and dread among citizens, who fear that their homes or companies will be targeted arbitrarily.

Furthermore, the timing of these proposed demolitions creates concerns. In an era of economic recovery, when livelihoods are already precarious owing to the global pandemic’s impact, it is critical to reconcile urban development goals with inhabitants’ well-being. Abrupt demolitions without adequate compensation or other plans for individuals affected might make already difficult situations worse.

Furthermore, it is critical to counter the idea that these demolitions are unfairly targeting specific communities or settlements. Whether true or false, this impression can breed mistrust and widen social gaps. Social harmony and inclusivity should be non-negotiable elements in urban planning for a metropolis as diverse and global as Abuja.

It is equally critical to emphasise that sustainable urban development includes more than just demolitions. A comprehensive approach to urban planning takes into account improving public services, creating economic opportunities, and, when necessary, responsible demolitions. To make sure that their views are heard and their concerns are addressed, the government must interact with stakeholders, especially the communities that are impacted.

Finally, restoring and preserving the Abuja Master Plan are excellent goals. They must, however, be pursued with transparency, inclusion, and a real concern for the city’s citizens’ well-being. All parties involved in the situation should be attentive in holding the administration responsible for its actions because the signals coming from Minister Wike’s intended demolitions deserve close examination. Abuja can only genuinely grow as an example of an African capital city with a cooperative and considerate attitude.

The recently announced demolition effort by the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, under the cover of “restoring” the Abuja Master Plan has raised more than a few eyebrows and merited more scrutiny.
