On February 7, the NLC, in a joint statement with the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC), issued a 14-day ultimatum to the federal government to address the rising cost of living. The culmination of this ultimatum led to the declaration of a two-day nationwide protest by the NLC, taking place on Tuesday and Wednesday.<\/p>\n
Ajaero expressed dissatisfaction with the government’s refusal to implement any of the demands made by the NLC, particularly in the aftermath of the removal of subsidy on petrol and the floating of the naira. Despite government warnings and threats against the rally, Ajaero stated that the NLC is committed to peacefully expressing the grievances of Nigerians and highlighting the extent of their suffering.<\/p>\n
The NLC president highlighted the impact of the subsidy removal on the cost of transportation and food commodities, leading to increased hardships for the citizens. To address these challenges, Ajaero mentioned that the NLC has proposed solutions such as the use of compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicles as a substitute for petrol-powered vehicles, the implementation of a cash transfer program, and an increment of the minimum wage.
