Twelve years after receiving the Stephen Oronsaye Report, the Federal Government of Nigeria has approved the implementation of some recommendations to reduce the cost of governance. In a move to streamline operations, 29 government agencies will be merged, eight parastatals will be integrated into eight other agencies, four agencies will be relocated to various ministries, and one is earmarked for scrapping.<\/p>\n
The Oronsaye report, submitted in 2012, recommended restructuring 541 Federal Government parastatals, commissions, and agencies. President Goodluck Jonathan had set up the committee, proposing slashing 263 statutory agencies to 161, scrapping 38 agencies, merging 52, and reverting 14 to ministries. The report also suggested repealing the law establishing the National Salaries and Wages Commission and merging the top three anti-corruption agencies.<\/p>\n
Implementing the Oronsaye report could result in significant savings, estimated at over N241 billion, according to a PUNCH analysis. The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, assured that the move wouldn’t lead to job losses but aims to reduce governance costs and redirect funds to developmental projects. Scrapped agencies include the Pension Transition Arrangement Directorate, with the National Senior Secondary School Education Commission under review for modification.
