Justice Evelyn Anyadike of the Federal High Court in Ilorin has granted bail to AbdulFatah Ahmed, the former governor of Kwara State, following his arraignment over allegations of diverting over N10 billion belonging to the state government.<\/p>\n
The bail conditions stipulate a deposit of N50 million to the court and the provision of a surety with landed properties in Ilorin, among other requirements.<\/p>\n
Ahmed will remain in the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) until the bail conditions are met.<\/p>\n
The EFCC had brought charges against Ahmed before the Federal High Court in Ilorin, alleging the diversion of substantial state funds during his tenure. The investigation revealed misappropriation and diversion of funds during Ahmed’s tenure, as well as during the administration of Saraki, under which Ahmed served as Commissioner for Finance.<\/p>\n
Ahmed, a key figure in Kwara State politics, served as the treasurer of the Forum of Commissioners of Finance in Nigeria and chaired the Budget Formulation Committee and Economic Team of Kwara State.<\/p>\n
His political career saw him succeed Saraki as governor, a position he held from 2011 until 2019 when he was succeeded by the incumbent governor, Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq.<\/p>\n
In 2021, the EFCC interrogated Ahmed regarding an alleged diversion of funds amounting to N9 billion from the Kwara State government’s coffers, further intensifying scrutiny into his tenure as governor.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
