This strong stance comes in response to the Federal Government’s decision to exclude SSANU members from the salary payments, which commenced for the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) on Monday.

The background of this dispute lies in the withheld salaries during the eight-month strike embarked upon by ASUU and SSANU in 2022, following the ‘No Work, No Pay policy’ invoked by the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari. Despite President Bola Tinubu’s approval for the release of four of the eight months’ withheld salaries for ASUU in October 2023, SSANU has been left out of this remuneration.

Expressing deep dissatisfaction with the exclusion, the National President of SSANU, Mr. Mohammed Ibrahim, emphasized the injustice faced by the union. While acknowledging ASUU’s payment, he asserted that it was only fair for SSANU members to receive their due salaries, given their integral role in the functioning of universities.

Ibrahim decried the palpable tension on university campuses and revealed that SSANU had taken the matter to higher authorities, including the Chief of Staff and Minister of Education, and escalated it to the Nigeria Labour Congress. He warned of potential unrest if SSANU members are not paid their backlog and indicated that a decision would be made after a meeting scheduled for Tuesday.

National Vice-President of SSANU, Abdussobur Salaam, echoed the sentiment, cautioning that the Joint Action Committee of NASU and SSANU should not be held responsible if university administration and corporate governance grind to a halt due to the prolonged injustice.

In a related development, ASUU’s Abuja zone mourned the untimely deaths of some of its members, attributing these tragic events to the harsh economic conditions exacerbated by poor remuneration and unfavorable working conditions. The union revealed that 46 academics lost their lives in universities under the Abuja zone, including institutions like the University of Abuja, Federal University of Technology, Minna, Federal University, Lafia, Nasarawa State University, Nasarawa, and Ibrahim Babaginda University, Lapai. The loss of an eminent Professor of Fisheries, Johnson Oyero of the Federal University of Technology, Minna, due to inability to afford quality healthcare, highlighted the dire consequences of the prevailing circumstances on academic professionals.

The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) has issued a stern warning that it will bring university activities to a standstill if the withheld salaries of its members are not promptly paid.
