Amidst the turmoil, reports have emerged alleging that some members of the Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria (PASAN) have purportedly endorsed the Extension of Service Bill. The revelation has raised eyebrows and intensified suspicions surrounding the motives behind the proposed extension.<\/p>\n
In response to these developments, the Foundation for Rights Enforcement, Enlightenment and Defence has accused the Clerk of the National Assembly, Magaji Tambawal, of orchestrating the move to extend his own tenure in office, despite being less than a year away from the end of his term. Mohammed Saidu, leader of the Foundation, has challenged Tambawal and other union members to disclose the details of their terms of service upon joining the National Assembly bureaucracy.<\/p>\n
Saidu stated, “This time, we want to put it to the Clerk that he is misleading the 10th Assembly, using a compromised union to pursue his personal ambition of breaching the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.” He further criticized Tambawal for allegedly disregarding constitutional provisions and manipulating internal processes for personal gain.<\/p>\n
The Foundation highlighted instances where Tambawal purportedly bypassed established rules and regulations, including during the election of the Senate president, and accused him of attempting to mislead the current Assembly by advocating for an extension of the retirement age contrary to constitutional provisions.<\/p>\n
Moreover, questions have been raised about the timing and transparency of a public hearing reportedly organized by Tambawal’s office, which coincided with a strike by the Nigerian Labour Congress. These allegations underscore growing concerns about the integrity and accountability of the National Assembly’s leadership.<\/p>\n
