This decision comes in the wake of the governorship primaries that transpired over the weekend, which Emwanta perceives as deeply flawed and indicative of a lack of internal democracy within the party.

The primary election, held on Saturday, produced three purported winners, adding a layer of complexity to the situation. Governor Hope Uzodimma, serving as the Chairman of the Electoral Committee, announced Dennis Idahosa as the winner. Simultaneously, the returning officer, Stanley Ugboaja, declared Monday Okpebholo victorious. Adding to the confusion, Ojo Babatunde, who claimed to represent the returning officers in all local governments, declared Anamero Dekeri as the winner of the election.

Expressing his discontent, Emwanta, in a letter addressed to the Ward Chairman of Ward 7 in Egor Local Government Area, highlighted his decision to resign from the APC effective February 18, 2024. He emphasized that the flawed process of the governorship primaries eroded his confidence in the party’s leadership structure and its commitment to political ethos.

In his resignation letter, Emwanta stated, “It is indeed a sad decision for me to take at this crucial time, particularly because I joined the party a few months ago. But, it is an inevitable decision since I still enjoy the inalienable right to freedom of association, (or dissociation), guaranteed under Section 40 of the 1999 Constitution.”

The crux of Emwanta’s dissatisfaction lies in his belief that continued association with the APC would compromise his ability to support any candidate of his choice independently. He expressed concern about being compelled to align with the party’s decisions, irrespective of his convictions, or risk being labeled “anti-party.” This echoes a similar grievance he had with his former party, the PDP, last year.

Looking ahead, Emwanta aspires to be an “independent” political player, free to support candidates in future elections based on their qualifications, integrity, and alignment with his values and beliefs. He asserted that this decision aligns with his life’s philosophy, social orientation, and the political principles he holds dear.

In a significant development, the former Edo State Commissioner for Communication and Orientation, Andrew Emwanta, has officially resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC).
