The National Treasurer of the Labour Party, Oluchi Opara, has raised allegations against the party’s chairman, Julius Abure, accusing him of forming an alliance with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) government in Edo State. Opara, who demanded accountability for approximately N3.5 billion in party finances, claimed the funds were generated from form sales and fundraising activities for the 2023 general elections.<\/p>\n
In an interview on Arise TV’s “Good Morning Show,” Opara asserted that Abure was in talks with the Edo State government led by the opposition PDP. She also revealed the alleged forgery of the late former chairman’s signature, Abdulkadir Salami, to withdraw money from the party’s account two months after his death. Opara challenged Abure to refute her claims if he believed they were untrue.<\/p>\n
Responding to Opara’s accusations, the Labour Party issued a statement dismissing her claims as malicious. The party accused Opara of being influenced by external forces and reading a “concocted statement drafted by detractors” to tarnish the party’s image. The statement, issued by the National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, defended Chairman Julius Abure, stating that there was no evidence of embezzlement, and the party’s accounts were regularly scrutinized by external auditors and regulatory bodies.
