A suspected kidnapper, Christopher Yaro, allegedly involved in the abduction of two Reverend Fathers for ransom in Pankshin, Plateau State, on February 1, 2024, has been apprehended by the Ogun State Police Command.

Omolola Odutola, the spokesperson for the command, disclosed this to Reporters Online on Tuesday, stating that the suspect was captured on Monday by police operatives in the Ago-Iwoye area of the state.

The kidnapped victims, identified as Father Kenneth Kanwa and Father Jude Nwachukwu, were reportedly taken from St. Vincent de Paul Fier Parish in the Diocese of Pankshin, Plateau State. It was revealed that the alleged abductors, who were members of the same parish, demanded a ransom of N25 million from the victims’ families and other church members for their release.

Polycarp Lubo, the chairman of the Plateau State chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria, though unable to confirm whether a ransom was paid, reportedly confirmed the priests’ release a week after the abduction.

Odutola, in an interview with newsmen online on Tuesday, explained that one of the suspects, Christopher Yaro, also a member of the church, claimed to have fled Pankshin out of fear of retaliation from the community upon discovery of his involvement in the priests’ abduction.

She stated, “At about 4:25 pm on Monday, we received intelligence that a kidnapping suspect, Christopher Yaro, had escaped to Ijebu-Ode after allegedly conspiring with another church member and five other men to abduct the two Reverend Fathers in the Pankshin area of Plateau State. The suspects were armed with four K.2 rifles during the crime. Yaro has been apprehended. Further information will be disseminated to the public upon completion of the investigation.”
