Bayobab, formerly known as MTN GlobalConnect, announced the successful landing of the cable in Ghana and Nigeria. With a length of 45,000km, 2Africa is the world&#8217;s longest subsea cable and will connect 33 countries with 46 landing points across Africa, Europe, and Asia upon completion. Alcatel Submarine Networks (ASN) is responsible for manufacturing and deploying the 16-fiber pair, 180Tbps cable, scheduled for final completion in 2024.<\/p>\n<p>In Nigeria, the cable landed in the Lekki area of Lagos, following its landing in Accra, Ghana, in November. Fr\u00e9d\u00e9ric Schepens, CEO of Bayobab, highlighted the significance of this achievement in connecting Africa to the world and vice versa. The 2Africa initiative aims to expand the rapidly growing African digital economy and positively impact growth across the continent.<\/p>\n<p>The 2Africa cable project, announced in 2020, involves partners such as Meta, Telecom Egypt, China Mobile International, Orange, Vodafone, and others. Work on laying the East African and West African portions of the cable has been underway since late 2022 and last year, respectively. Future landings are planned in countries like Cameroon, the Ivory Coast, Senegal, Portugal, and the UK.<\/p>\n<p>Etisalat\u2019s e&amp; announced that the 2Africa cable will land at the company&#8217;s SmartHub data center in Kalba, United Arab Emirates (UAE). This move is expected to enhance the Internet user experience in the UAE, positioning the country as one of the region&#8217;s premier ICT hubs. e&amp;&#8217;s involvement in the transformative project will enable global carriers and content providers to deliver cutting-edge technology in a carrier-neutral data center ecosystem.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to hosting the 2Africa cable, e&amp; has partnered with Telecom Egypt and Indonesian telco Telin for the ICE IV Project. This new subsea cable project aims to connect Indonesia and Singapore to India, Oman, Egypt, and the United Arab Emirates. The ICE IV cable will run through the Sunda Strait between Java and Sumatra islands in Indonesia, with a target ready-for-service date in Q4 2027. Terrestrial extensions are also being considered to further enhance connectivity between the Middle East, Egypt, and India.<\/p>\n<p>Mohamed Nasr, managing director and CEO at Telecom Egypt, emphasized the significance of the ICE IV Project, stating that it underscores the importance of critical infrastructure and Telecom Egypt&#8217;s commitment to connectivity initiatives.
