The Netherlands, a nation scarcely larger than Nigeria’s Zamfara state, stands as a testament to what can be achieved with vision and strategic planning in agriculture.<\/p>\n

Despite its compact size, the Dutch State has secured its position as the world’s second-largest agricultural exporter by value. This feat is attributed to its exceptional infrastructure, logistics, advanced technologies, and innovative agricultural practices.<\/p>\n

Leonie van der Stijl, Deputy Consul General and Head of the Economic Department for the Kingdom of the Netherlands, highlighted the pivotal role of infrastructure in the Dutch agricultural success story. “We’re big exporters in the Netherlands because we also have an amazing infrastructure and logistics in place. It\u2019s top-notch,” she stated.<\/p>\n

Driven by food security concerns, the Netherlands embarked on a journey two decades ago to double food production while halving resource use. Through innovation and efficiency in agriculture, the country has made remarkable strides towards achieving this goal.<\/p>\n

One of the hallmarks of Dutch agriculture is its year-round production facilitated by greenhouse technologies. Additionally, the Netherlands has invested significantly in soil health and crop yield optimization through extensive research and data analysis.<\/p>\n

The Dutch tomato industry, for instance, leads globally in yield, producing more tomatoes per square mile than anywhere else on just 6.9 square miles of land. This success underscores the efficiency and productivity achievable with the right agricultural practices.<\/p>\n

In contrast, Nigeria grapples with low agricultural yields and significant post-harvest losses due to inadequate infrastructure and logistical challenges. Despite being the third-largest producer of tomatoes in terms of harvested area, Nigeria records the lowest yield among the top 25 producers.<\/p>\n

Security concerns further exacerbate the challenges faced by Nigerian farmers and markets. Insecurity along transportation routes and in major marketplaces like Mile 12 in Lagos adds layers of complexity to the agricultural value chain.<\/p>\n

Jaap van Beesten, Country Manager for Nigeria at DSM Nutritional Products Nigeria Ltd, emphasized the importance of collaboration and stakeholder engagement in driving agricultural success. He underscored the Netherlands’ tradition of dialogue and cooperation among industry players, a practice that has fostered innovation and sustainability.<\/p>\n

Moving forward, stakeholders advocate for closer collaboration between Nigeria and the Netherlands to leverage the latter’s expertise in capacity building, innovation, and technology.
