Recent protests in Niger and Kano States highlight the escalating discontent, with bread bakers in Kano lamenting the soaring cost of wheat flour, a key component in bread production. The chairperson of the association, Fatima Awwal, led the protest, emphasizing the dire consequences for small-scale businesses, predominantly run by women.

The protesters highlighted the drastic increase in the price of a bag of flour, from N16,000 to N43,000, making it economically unfeasible for many bread bakers. Fatima Awwal appealed urgently to the Federal Government to address the continuous surge in flour prices, expressing concern that the industry, which caters to the poor, is on the verge of collapse.

Gurasa, a local bread in the north, becomes a focal point in this struggle, being a staple for the downtrodden and a source of livelihood for many. The protesters’ placards conveyed messages of frustration, citing high inflation, opposition to flour price hikes, and calling on the government to intervene for the sake of the hungry and struggling citizens.

While some attribute these challenges to the removal of fuel subsidies, arguing that it has a domino effect on transport costs and commodity prices, others point to the ongoing depreciation of the Naira against the dollar.
