The situation, characterized by long queues at filling stations primarily in Lagos State and parts of Ogun State, is sparking fears of a nationwide shortage if adequate measures aren’t taken.

Since Monday, long queues have reappeared at various filling stations in Lagos, causing traffic congestion in areas like Ikeja. The scarcity anxiety has extended to parts of Ogun State, hinting at a broader crisis if the NNPCL fails to meet distribution demands promptly.

Despite assurances from the NNPCL spokesperson, Olufemi Soneye, stating that there are no supply issues and products remain available, the persistent queues suggest otherwise. According to Soneye, the distribution hiccup experienced in certain areas, particularly in Lagos, has been resolved, yet the queues linger.

Marketers highlight NNPCL’s pivotal role as the sole importer of refined petroleum products in Nigeria, emphasizing their dependency on its supply. However, discrepancies arise as NNPCL’s allocations reportedly fall short of the demand, leading to frustration among marketers.

Surajudeen Bada, Chairman of the Oil and Gas Association in Ogun State, urges NNPCL to be transparent and address the worsening situation. Bada underscores the disparity between NNPCL’s claims of adequate stock and the observed insufficient allocations to private depot owners, exacerbating the fuel scarcity.

National Vice President of IPMAN, Hammed Fashola, expresses hope for alleviation in the next few days as NNPCL resolves its distribution issues. However, the impact on IPMAN members remains significant, with assurances from NNPCL awaited for relief.

Conversely, the Major Energy Marketers Association of Nigeria reports no disruptions, indicating a contrasting experience compared to independent marketers. MEMAN’s spokesperson, Oliseh Wakwe, affirms no issues from their end, highlighting the varying effects across different sectors of the oil market.

Oil marketers are expressing concerns over a potential petrol scarcity as the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) faces challenges in making the product available to depot owners and other dealers.
