The much-anticipated meeting between the Senate and security chiefs to address the nation’s growing insecurity faced a setback on Wednesday due to the absence of key officials, including the National Security Adviser (NSA) Nuhu Ribadu and Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Christopher Musa.<\/p>\n

Present at the briefing were Chief of Army Staff Lt. General Taoreed Lagbaja, Chief of Naval Staff Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla, Chief of the Air Force Air Marshal Hassan Abubakar, Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun, and Director General of the Department of State Services Yusuf Bichi.<\/p>\n

The Senate had summoned the service chiefs and heads of security agencies following a resolution adopted last week on insecurity. The meeting, scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday, could not proceed due to the absence of Ribadu and General Musa.<\/p>\n

Senate President Godswill Akpabio announced the postponement, stating, “We thank you all for honoring our invitation for the very important interface on the way out of the lingering security crisis at hand. However, due to the absence of the NSA and the Chief of Defence Staff, the interactive session will no longer hold today.”<\/p>\n

Akpabio emphasized the necessity for Ribadu and General Musa’s presence at the session, adding that the Senate had decided to include other public officers connected to security matters in the planned interface session.<\/p>\n

“The Senate in its wisdom has decided to add other public officers whose offices are connected to security matters to be part of the interactive session,” Akpabio said.<\/p>\n

He expressed gratitude to the attending Service Chiefs for their presence and stressed the importance of comprehensive deliberations involving all relevant stakeholders to effectively address the nation’s security challenges.<\/p>\n

The Senate resolved to hold the expanded session on Tuesday next week, inviting additional officials including the Minister of Defence, Minister of State for Defence, Minister of Police Affairs, Minister of State for Police Affairs, Minister of Interior, Minister of Finance, and the Director General of the National Intelligence Agency.<\/p>\n
