The backdrop of this discussion dates back to January 2020 when the Federal Government approved a significant raise in the monthly allowance for corps members, from N19,000 to N33,000. This adjustment came approximately a year after the new minimum wage bill was signed into law by former President Muhammadu Buhari in April 2019.

Speaking during an appearance on Channels TV’s Sunday Politics, Minister Bio-Ibrahim acknowledged the challenges posed by dwindling oil revenues and emphasized the government’s commitment to finding innovative solutions to ensure the welfare of corps members. She stated, “We can’t say for sure; we all understand that resources are dwindling; even oil revenues are not as they used to be, but we will find innovative ways of ensuring that corps members’ welfare is well taken care of.”

Minister Bio-Ibrahim went on to highlight broader reforms in the NYSC scheme, envisioning it as more than just a social program but as a potential revenue-generating agency. The proposed reforms aim to equip corps members with skills that make them market-ready, either as employees or entrepreneurs. She elaborated on this vision, stating, “The reforms which transform the NYSC into a revenue-generating agency and prepare the corps members for the job market and to be decently and gainfully employed or to be employers of labour through entrepreneurship and of course, perfect matching into primary assignment and all the support they need in that career path.”

The minister’s remarks suggest a comprehensive approach to not only addressing the issue of monthly allowances but also transforming the NYSC into an entity that contributes to the economic landscape by fostering entrepreneurship and preparing youth for the workforce. As the nation grapples with economic challenges, such initiatives signal a commitment to adapt and enhance programs that positively impact the development and prospects of Nigerian youth.

The Minister of Youth Development, Jamila Bio-Ibrahim, has shed light on the uncertainty surrounding a potential increase in the monthly allowance, popularly known as ‘Alawee,’ for National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members by the Federal Government.
