Ubani, known for his legal activity and commitment to human rights, discusses his experiences, political decisions, and legal struggles in the interview.

Drawing attention to the inconveniences faced by travelers and the alleged extortion along these routes, Ubani emphasized the need to address the issue administratively and politically. Although the court supported his case, Ubani plans to appeal or modify his case to advocate for a reduction rather than the complete elimination of roadblocks. He said while fielding questions from Abuja City Journal’s team, “Yes, either I appeal or I modify my case and go back to the trial court. That is what I want to do. Because it is a case that I feel should be addressed, but one thing I did was raise the consciousness of everyone, even if I didn’t succeed in the court to get the judgment in my favor. But what I have succeeded in doing is pricking the conscience of those in power and speaking to those governors in the South Eastern region that they can take up this case politically and meet the Chief of Army Staff or I.G even the President.”

Ubani’s journey in the legal profession began with his involvement in the Ikeja branch of the NBA, renowned for its activism in human rights and public interest matters. Climbing the ranks, he served as the finance chairman and later became the chairman of the branch. His advocacy for democracy, human rights, and the defense of the vulnerable earned him the position of the second vice president of the NBA, a role he assumed unopposed due to his unwavering commitment.

Ubani also delves into his legal career, citing notable cases where he championed public interest causes. From restraining the government during the NIN registration to challenging the compulsory nature of COVID-19 vaccination, Ubani has consistently used the law to protect citizens’ rights.

The interview concludes with Ubani’s vision for legal reforms crucial to Nigeria’s progress. He emphasizes the need to address corruption, improve infrastructure, and create an environment conducive to private entrepreneurship. Ubani believes that effective implementation of laws, coupled with a genuine commitment to citizens’ welfare, will lead to positive change in the country.

Dr. Monday Ubani, the former vice president of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), stated in a recent interview with the Abuja City Journal that he intends to appeal a Federal High Court ruling on multiple roadblocks in Nigeria’s South-East region.
