The legislation, enacted by the State House of Assembly, seeks to address long-standing issues surrounding burial customs.<\/p>\n<p>Governor Charles Soludo, in addressing the challenges associated with burial practices, emphasized the progressive nature of the Anambra Burial Law. He stated, &#8220;The Anambra Burial Law is a very progressive law to remove the burden and pressure on the poor as well as liberate women from oppressive practices during burials. We celebrate &#8216;befitting living&#8217; and only a decent funeral.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The law mandates that mortuary attendants must promptly report to the Ministry of Health any corpse that has remained in their facilities for over one month from the date of deposit. Violation of this provision carries penalties, including a fine of N100,000, a six-month prison sentence, or both.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, the law addresses the public display of caskets, imposing a fine of N50,000 and the possibility of one month imprisonment for those found guilty of fabricating and selling caskets for display.
