Taiwo Oyedele, Chairman of the Presidential Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms Committee, has outlined Nigeria’s aspirations to become the most preferred country in Africa for retirement, creative economy, and technology research and development. This ambitious vision was shared during BusinessDay\u2019s Africa Trade Summit and Investment Summit, themed “Reimagining Economic Growth in Africa.”<\/p>\n

Oyedele expressed the goal of positioning Nigeria as a competitive global hub, urging companies to consider establishing their headquarters in the country. He emphasized the importance of attracting investments and boosting the economy by becoming a preferred destination for technology, research and development, energy transition, business outsourcing, and the creative economy.<\/p>\n

He highlighted the potential economic benefits, citing the Philippines, which generated $35 billion in 2022 from business outsourcing. Oyedele believes Nigeria can achieve similar success.<\/p>\n

To achieve these goals, the committee, through fiscal governance and revenue transformation, aims to facilitate inclusive economic growth and enhance competitiveness. Oyedele shared that the committee aims to increase the tax-to-GDP ratio from 10% to 18% within the next two to three years without introducing new taxes.<\/p>\n

“We are harmonising the number of taxes, officially 60, unofficially over 200 across all levels of government combined,” Oyedele stated. The committee also plans to modernize outdated laws, including some from the colonial era, and mend those in need of amendments.<\/p>\n

Additionally, Oyedele stressed the importance of building a spending framework with a focus on reprioritizing initiatives. He highlighted the need to address fundamental issues, such as providing access to education, health, and clean water for the 130 million people in poverty, before embarking on projects like international worship centers or airports.<\/p>\n
