TYI emphasised that because the petitioners voluntarily initiated the legal process, it is contradictory for them and their advocates to now advocate for self-help measures. Such actions only put the stability and law and order of the country in jeopardy.

The group was taken aback by Professor Utomi’s support for public protests, a scholar known for his dedication to the rule of law. They cited similar protests in 2020 that resulted in widespread violence and the destruction of vital infrastructure, particularly in Lagos and other areas of the South-West, and recalled that Professor Utomi had previously led a group that occupied the national headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Abuja.

TYI emphasised that no group claiming to represent the interests of the country should take part in activities that might disturb public order during this crucial time. The group advised the petitioners and those who supported them to respect the legal process they started and accept the Supreme Court’s ultimate decision.

Furthermore, TYI warned against a recurrence of large-scale violence similar to what occurred after the #EndSARS protest in Lagos, and urged those considering such actions to reconsider. The group urged the appropriate security agencies to pay attention to the alleged danger to national security and take appropriate action.

Udo E.
