Broadband penetration also decreased from 45.47% to 40.85% in September.

Reuben Muoka, Director of Public Affairs at the NCC, clarified, “With the consequential adjustment, which aligns with the International Telecommunication Union’s calculation of teledensity, the nation’s teledensity dropped from 115.63% to 102.30% in September.”

Despite this decline, active voice subscription statistics saw a slight increase from 220,361,186 to 221,769,883 as of September 2023. Internet subscriptions also experienced a minor rise, growing from 159,034,717 in August 2023 to 160,171,757 in September 2023.

The NCC emphasized that this adjustment aligns with its mandate to monitor and report on the state of the telecommunications industry under Section 89 Subsection 3(d) of the Nigerian Communications Act 2003.

Dr. Aminu Maida, the Executive Vice Chairman of the NCC, stressed the importance of maintaining data integrity in the telecom industry. He stated that the adjustment ensures accurate measurement of progress in broadband penetration rates, quality of service, and population coverage.

In a related context, Karl Toriola, CEO of MTN Nigeria, addressed a key barrier to digital inclusion—the cost of phones. Toriola highlighted that 5G coverage has quadrupled in the country and suggested local assembling to reduce production costs, making smartphones more affordable.

Toriola also emphasized the significance of aggregate credit scoring history for citizens to finance their mobile devices. He mentioned active collaboration with regulatory authorities and the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy to address device affordability and promote digital inclusion in Nigeria.

This adjustment in telecom metrics sheds light on the challenges and solutions necessary for sustaining telecommunications growth and fostering digital inclusion in Nigeria.

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has reported a decline in telephone penetration for November, attributing it to an adjustment in statistical indicators to align with new population growth figures and international best practices.
