Following a devastating landslip in a remote area of Abuja, Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike has taken swift action by ordering the Chairmen of the FCT’s six Area Councils to form a Surveillance Committee in their respective councils to combat insecurity caused by illegal mining activities.<\/p>\n

Wike gave the advice in response to the challenges outlined by the chairmen of the councils during a familiarisation meeting in Abuja on Thursday, saying that the surveillance committee will help in checking insecurity and illegal mining activities in communities, which creates an avenue for insecurity.<\/p>\n

Danladi Chiya, Chairman of Kwali Area Council, revealed that 19 people were kidnapped in Bwari Area Council on Thursday and begged the minister to intervene.<\/p>\n

The landslip exposed the serious risks associated with unregulated mining practises because it happened in a region where illegal mining operations are common. The catastrophe, which claimed 30 lives, also significantly damaged the environment in where it occurred.<\/p>\n

Illegal mining is a persistent issue in various regions of Nigeria, fueled by economic pressures, lax regulation, and inadequate enforcement of mining laws.<\/p>\n
