Senator Abubakar Kyari, the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, has called upon research institutes and agricultural colleges to lead the charge in transforming the agricultural sector through robust research and training initiatives. The minister emphasized this during a workshop organized by the Agricultural Research Council of Nigeria (ARCN) for its directors, CEOs of National Agricultural Research Institutes, and Federal Colleges of Agriculture in Abuja.<\/p>\n
Represented by the Minister of State for Agriculture, Aliyu Abdullahi, Kyari underscored that the drive for agricultural transformation is the primary motivation behind the Federal Government’s insistence on the implementation of the amended ARCN Act in 2021. The amendment facilitates the efficient management of research and training, including the establishment of spinoff companies to commercialize research products and innovations.<\/p>\n
Kyari stressed the need to reinforce this platform to enhance the internally generated revenue of institutions, supplementing funds for research, training, and extension services. He specifically directed Colleges of Agriculture to prioritize vocational and skill acquisition in their training programs to provide practical knowledge of agricultural businesses.<\/p>\n
Highlighting concerns about the shortages of staple crops crucial for food security, Kyari referenced President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s prioritization of food security in the national agenda. He emphasized that agriculture is the key sector for transforming the economy, addressing food, nutrition, industry, and job demands. Increased agricultural productivity, he noted, is pivotal for socio-economic transformation and livelihood improvement in Nigeria.<\/p>\n
In his remarks, Prof. Garba Sharabutu, emphasized the council’s commitment to collaborating with stakeholders to achieve self-sufficiency in food production.
