The nominations for the 2024 Oscars were announced today with “Oppenheimer” leading the pack with 13 nods followed by “Poor Things<\/span>” with 11. The 96th annual Academy Awards follow a year that saw the “Barbenheimer<\/span>” phenomenon of “Barbie” and\u00a0Christopher Nolan<\/span>‘s epic World War II biopic pack movie theaters around the world with each raking in\u00a0hundreds of millions<\/span>\u00a0of dollars at the box office.<\/p>\n

Tuesday’s announcement wasn’t without its\u00a0share of surprises<\/span>, with\u00a0no best director<\/span>\u00a0nomination for\u00a0Greta Gerwig<\/span>\u00a0for “Barbie” \u2014 she and Noah Baumbach were nominated for the movie’s adapted screenplay \u2014 and\u00a0no acting nod<\/span>\u00a0for star\u00a0Margot Robbie<\/span>, who was also a producer for the best picture nominee. (“To say that I’m disappointed that they are not nominated in their respective categories would be an understatement,”\u00a0said Ryan Gosling<\/span>, who was nominated for his role as Ken.) Past Oscar winner\u00a0Leonardo DiCaprio<\/span>, who starred in “Killers of the Flower Moon<\/span>,” also didn’t receive an acting nod this year.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, DiCaprio’s co-star Lily Gladstone became the\u00a0first Native American<\/span>\u00a0to be nominated for best actress.\u00a0America Ferrera<\/span>\u00a0scored a best supporting actress nomination for her performance in “Barbie” after she\u00a0wasn’t nominated<\/span>\u00a0for a Golden Globe, and Justine Triet became the\u00a0eighth woman<\/span> nominated for best director for “Anatomy of a Fall.<\/p>\n

Last week, Nolan’s drama about J. Robert Oppenheimer, the leader of the top-secret Manhattan Project that\u00a0created the atomic bomb<\/span>, led the nominations for the BAFTA Film Awards with 13 nods. “Poor Things,” starring Emma Stone and directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, received 11 nominations for the U.K.’s version of the Oscars.<\/p>\n

At the\u00a0Golden Globes<\/span>\u00a0earlier this month, “Oppenheimer” won five awards, including best drama motion picture. Nolan took home the Globe for best director. Cillian Murphy’s portrayal of the title character earned him best actor in a drama, and co-star Robert Downey Jr. won best supporting actor.<\/p>\n

First-time Globe nominee\u00a0Lily Gladstone<\/span>\u00a0won best drama actress for her performance in Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon.”<\/p>\n

“Poor Things” won the Globe for best musical or comedy motion picture, and Stone won the category’s best actress award. Paul Giamatti won best actor in a musical or comedy for Alexander Payne’s “The Holdovers,” and Giamatti’s co-star\u00a0Da’Vine Joy Randolph<\/span>\u00a0\u2014 another first-time Globe nominee \u2014 won best supporting actress.<\/p>\n

“Barbie” was\u00a0nominated for nine Globes<\/span>, including best director. It won two, best original song for\u00a0Billie Eilish<\/span>‘s “What Was I Made for?” and the new award for cinematic and box office achievement.<\/p>\n
