The inauguration, conducted in collaboration with the African Health Budget Network (AHBN), reflects the commitment of the Nigerian government to safeguarding the environment, human health, and socio-economic development.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Salma Anas, the Special Adviser to the President on Health, emphasized the significance of ensuring the safety of human health, animals, the environment, and plants in the application of modern biotechnology. She commended the initiative as a vital step to protect Nigerians and ensure their health. Dr. Anas pledged her office&#8217;s full support to the committees in their important roles.<\/p>\n<p>The Director-General of the National Biosafety Management Agency, Dr. Agnes Yemisi Asagbra, urged the committees to be dedicated to their national assignment. She assured them of the agency&#8217;s commitment to providing the necessary support for the successful execution of their mandate.<\/p>\n<p>The Terms of Reference (ToR) for the National Advisory Committee on Biosecurity (NACB) include making decisions on the implementation report, ensuring funds availability for special and critical biosecurity cases of national interest, and promoting collaboration between national and sub-national entities for a comprehensive biosecured environment.<\/p>\n<p>For the National Technical Working Group on Biosecurity (NTWGB), the ToR involve updating relevant federal ministries, departments, agencies, states, local governments, professional associations, and stakeholders on biosecurity issues. The group is also tasked with providing and considering national positions that support a biosecured Nigeria at the international level and offering technical support for national biosecurity instruments to achieve international best practices.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Aminu Magashi, the Coordinator of the Africa Health Budget Network (AHBN), highlighted the importance of the meeting in inaugurating two high-level committees crucial for supporting the implementation of the biosecurity policy and action plan over the next five years. He recalled commitments made during the National COVID-19 Summit to support and strengthen the NBMA in leading the national biosecurity agenda.
