Kano State’s organized labor union, which is affiliated with the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), has declared a warning strike, effectively shutting down government offices and other institutions across the state.<\/p>\n
The labor union’s decision to go on strike is a clear indication of unhappiness with the federal government’s handling of socioeconomic concerns and labor-related issues. Workers have expressed many concerns, including the recent withdrawal of fuel subsidies. The strike is a warning shot, signaling the gravity of these issues and demanding immediate response from authorities.<\/p>\n
Earlier today, members of the labor union were present to enforce the strike action. Ado Riruwai, the State Vice Chairman of the union who spearheaded the enforcement efforts, informed Vanguard<\/em> that all government offices in the state had been shuttered. Riruwai, who also serves as the Chairman of Private Sector Unions in the state, added that the power sector and banks were also affected.<\/p>\n Furthermore, Riruwai mentioned that they were en route to the airport to ensure no flights departed.<\/p>\n He emphasized, “We have successfully closed down the power sector, and banks are not in operation. We’ve received reports that a flight took off from the airport this morning, and we are heading there to ensure no more flights depart. All government offices have been securely locked.”<\/p>\n The Kano Electric Distribution Company (KEDCO) headquarters was among the sites that were closed. It’s worth noting that the NLC had already declared a two-day warning strike to protest the enormous hardship and deprivation caused by the elimination of fuel subsidies across the country.<\/p>\n The closure of government offices has affected a range of public services, including healthcare, education, and administrative services.
