The Federal Government has issued a caution against the practice of public crowdfunding to pay ransoms for kidnapped victims, stating that it will exacerbate the ongoing spate of abductions. Minister of Defence, Muhammad Abubakar Badaru, conveyed this warning during a briefing with State House correspondents after the Federal Executive Council meeting presided over by President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa.<\/p>\n
The advisory comes in the wake of reports indicating that Nigerians have collectively raised over N50 million through crowdfunding to secure the release of the remaining five daughters of Mansoor Al-Kadriya. The siblings were abducted alongside their father in Bwari Council, Abuja, on December 26, 2023. Despite the release of their father, one daughter was tragically killed by the kidnappers for failing to raise the required ransom.<\/p>\n
Minister Badaru emphasized the existence of laws against ransom payments and expressed concern over public calls for donations to fund these payments. He urged Nigerians to refrain from responding to ransom demands publicly, asserting that it would further fuel the problem. Badaru emphasized the government’s stance to starve kidnappers of the profits that drive abductions. He highlighted ongoing security efforts to track down bandits responsible for recent kidnappings in the suburbs of the Federal Capital Territory, linked to their migration from military operations in the North West and North Central zones.
