Coordinating Minister of Health, Ali Pate, highlighted the escalating costs of pharmaceuticals, rendering life-saving commodities inaccessible for many Nigerians. The executive order intends to foster the thriving of local drug manufacturers, counteracting the impact of major multinational companies exiting the market and contributing to increased competition.<\/p>\n

Pate emphasized the President’s commitment to prioritizing healthcare access under the Renewed Hope Agenda, aiming to address rising drug costs, protect the health and well-being of citizens, and fortify the healthcare sector’s regulatory framework.<\/p>\n

He stated, “The President\u2019s intent is that we begin to take steps to enable the local manufacturers to survive, to thrive and to deliver the basic commodities that are key to saving lives. And he directed that the Attorney General of the Federation work with us to come up with an executive order, which is the mechanism through which he will act, given the concern that many Nigerians are suffering from the costs of pharmaceuticals, as well as other devices. That is the first important step and should be coming very soon.”<\/p>\n

Additionally, the Federal Executive Council has undertaken measures to strengthen healthcare regulation and address human resource shortages. Key regulatory bodies, including the Medical and Dental Council, will receive funding exceptions, ensuring their effectiveness, and the recruitment of healthcare workers will be expedited by delegating approval of recruitment waivers directly to the Federal Ministry of Health.<\/p>\n
