The Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency (LASCOPA) has issued a cautionary advisory to consumers of fried plantains, commonly known as “plantain chips,” urging them to exercise vigilance due to a potentially poisonous product circulating in the market. The agency advises consumers to be mindful of the sources from which they purchase plantain chips to avoid unwitting exposure to harmful substances and preventable food poisoning.<\/p>\n
In a statement released on Tuesday, LASCOPA called on residents of Lagos to be alert to any unwholesome practices in the processing and frying of plantains for sale. This advisory comes in response to a viral online image posted by an eyewitness, allegedly showing a plantain chips seller adding Polythene, known as “Rubber,” into the hot vegetable oil used for frying the plantains.<\/p>\n
Expressing deep concern about the potential health implications for consumers, LASCOPA announced that it is currently investigating this discovery and will take appropriate actions to protect consumers and hold those responsible for the dangerous practice accountable.<\/p>\n
