Edo State has recently joined this movement, announcing a strategic partnership with Oando Clean Energy Limited for the deployment of electric buses in 2024.

Borno State has already implemented electric city buses in Maiduguri through a collaboration with African Motor Works (AMW). Despite the evident promise of the initiative, challenges like fluctuating foreign exchange rates have impeded the expansion of electric fleets. According to Adamu Muhammad from AMW, while operating electric buses might currently be less profitable, they present a viable, long-term solution, contingent on a significant initial capital investment.

Both the federal government and Lagos State share ambitious plans for the widespread adoption of electric buses. Lagos, in collaboration with Oando Clean Energy Limited, unveiled its intentions in 2022. Although the project encountered delays after delivering the first set of electric buses in April 2023, policymakers remain committed to the initiative.

Experts view the increasing investment in electric buses as a strategic response to long-term cost benefits, anticipating a subsequent reduction in transportation expenses. Gbenga Faleye, CEO of SAGLEV, underlined the significant potential for electric vehicles in Nigeria. Faleye highlighted that 50 percent of Nigerians having access to 12 hours of electricity weekly positions them as potential electric vehicle buyers.

A recent research study by Cox Automotive found that the average price of new electric vehicles dropped significantly by September 2023, nearing the cost of gas-powered vehicles. As manufacturers release more affordable models and improve battery technology, the price difference is expected to decrease further.

Calculating the efficiency of electric vehicles involves understanding the cost of electricity and the vehicle’s efficiency. The US-based Natural Resources Defense Council emphasizes that EVs vary in efficiency, with lower kWh/100 miles rates being preferable.

Local assembly of electric vehicles is seen as a practical option for Nigeria due to the high costs associated with importing. Gbenga Faleye, however, highlighted challenges, including a significant skill gap and technical issues. While the government has proposed policies, their implementation remains a substantial challenge, creating uncertainty in the deployment of electric buses.

The enthusiasm of Nigerian policymakers towards electric buses represents a notable step towards sustainable and cost-effective transportation, despite the present challenges.

In a push to alleviate rising transportation costs, Nigerian governments, both at the federal and state levels, are forging ahead with plans to introduce electric buses across the country.
