The Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology (OAUSTECH) in Okitipupa, Ondo State, faces the prospect of a strike as trade unions, including the Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Universities (SSANU), Non-Academic Staff Unions and Allied Educational Institutions (NASU), and National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT), notify Governor Lucky Ayedatiwa of impending industrial action.<\/p>\n
Mr. Temidayo Temola, Chairman of the Joint Action Congress (JAC) of the unions, highlighted key grievances, including the non-implementation of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) new minimum wage of N30,000 since 2019, discriminatory payment of N35,000 wage awards, and delays in the institution’s subvention. Temola emphasized that despite the rising cost of living, the 2019 minimum wage had not been reflected in workers’ salaries.<\/p>\n
The unions expressed dissatisfaction with the discriminatory payment of the N35,000 wage awards and noted that continuous disparities would not be tolerated. Additionally, concerns were raised about the decline in the monthly subvention from N60 million to N42 million, which later rose to N54 million, causing delays in release.<\/p>\n
In a press conference following the Congress, Temola conveyed the unions’ stance: “We are putting the state government, our university Governing Council, and Management on notice of an impending industrial action if these issues are not resolved in a few days to come.”<\/p>\n
