The Controller of Corrections for the Federal Capital Territory Command, Francis John, has issued a stern warning to staff members regarding any form of misconduct, particularly trafficking, during his inspection of all custodial centres in the FCT command.<\/p>\n
The inspection tour, which commenced on Monday, January 8, 2024, saw Francis John visiting various facilities, starting with the medium-security custodial centre in Kuje. He later proceeded to the Dukpa Model Farm Centre, the medium-security custodial centre in Suleja, Niger State, the Juvenile Deradicalisation Special Centre, and the medium-security custodial centre in Karshi, Abuja.<\/p>\n
Addressing the staff, Controller John emphasized the importance of diligence in their duties, urging them to avoid absenteeism, extortion from inmates, and any involvement in trafficking or misconduct. He stated, “You must be up and doing in your various duty posts. You must avoid absenteeism and extortion from inmates, and I will not condone trafficking or any form of misconduct.”<\/p>\n
Despite issuing warnings, John commended the staff for maintaining peace and serenity in their respective facilities, encouraging them to continue in that positive direction. He acknowledged the sacrifices made by the joint security forces guarding the Kuje custodial centre, expressing gratitude for their dedication.<\/p>\n
Addressing the security personnel, John said, “Your job is a sacrificial one. You sacrifice your lives for others to sleep. Therefore, no one should look down on you.” He assured them of his support in ensuring the security of the custodial centre is not compromised.<\/p>\n
In a message to the inmates, the Controller urged them to stay hopeful, emphasizing that their imprisonment is a temporary trial and an opportunity to prepare for the future. He encouraged them to take advantage of the skill acquisition and education programs offered by the correctional service.<\/p>\n
Francis John, who assumed his role as the Controller of Corrections for the FCT command on December 29, 2023, succeeded Ibrahim Idris, recently promoted to the rank of Assistant Controller General of Corrections, in charge of Training and Staff Development. The inspection comes in the wake of a Kuje jailbreak on July 5, 2022, during which over 900 inmates, including 64 high-profile Boko Haram terrorists, escaped.
