Mr. Eluyemi Eluwade, the State Commandant of NSCDC, disclosed these developments during a press briefing at the command’s headquarters in Uyo on Thursday.

The arrests stemmed from credible intelligence received by the command regarding the abduction of 14-year-old Wisdom Ifiok, who had been missing since January 2023. Acting swiftly on the information, the NSCDC conducted a raid on January 4 at a residence in Ndon Ebom, Uruan Local Government Area, where the missing boy was found. Seven suspects were arrested in connection with the abduction.

Eluwade explained, “The minor was taken for one year without the consent of his parents and was used to carry out fishing activities in riverine areas up to the high sea into Cameroon. The key suspect, who was the master to the minor, Mr Otobong Anietie Udoekong, is currently undergoing interrogation for criminal conspiracy, abduction of a minor, and subjecting the victim to child labour. Other suspects are being profiled to ascertain their level of involvement.”

In a separate operation on January 5, the NSCDC arrested one Peter Okon engaged in illegal mining activities along Ekpri Nsukara in Uyo without a proper mining license. The command impounded two tipper trucks and a Peugeot car during the raid. Eluwade emphasized that mining without a license is illegal and poses environmental hazards, endangering lives and depriving the government of revenues.

Warning against illegal mining activities, Eluwade assured that the NSCDC would continue to combat such activities in Akwa Ibom. He called on residents to refrain from engaging in criminal activities, emphasizing the commitment of the command to arrest and prosecute criminals to maintain the state’s safety.

Eluwade announced that upon the conclusion of profiling and investigation, suspects involved in the abduction and child labour cases would be handed over to relevant agencies, while the individual engaged in illegal mining would face charges in court. The NSCDC remains steadfast in its efforts to uphold law and order in Akwa Ibom.

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) Akwa Ibom Command has successfully apprehended eight suspects involved in various criminal activities, including abduction of minors, child labour, and illegal mining.
