Governor Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State has made the controversial decision to suspend Igwe Damian Ezeani, the traditional ruler of Neni in the state’s Anaocha Local Government Area, indefinitely.<\/p>\n
The suspension reportedly stems from Igwe Ezeani’s recent conferment of a chieftaincy title, known as “Odenjinji” (meaning “like a tornado”), on Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, who recently joined the All Progressives Congress (APC) with aspirations to contest the governorship in 2025.<\/p>\n
According to the state government, the monarch failed to seek permission for this action, leading to his suspension. One local leader in Neni suggested that Governor Soludo might be displeased with the title given to Senator Ubah.<\/p>\n
The State Commissioner for Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Community Affairs, Tony-Collins Nwabunwanne, conveyed the decision in a letter addressed to the traditional ruler, with copies sent to the Commissioner of Police in Anambra State and the Director of the State Security Service in the state.<\/p>\n
Nwabunwanne highlighted the Code of Conduct for Traditional Rulers in Anambra State, emphasizing that no traditional ruler can confer a chieftaincy title on an individual from outside his community without obtaining permission from the traditional ruler of the recipient’s community. Furthermore, the commissioner stated that the state government had issued a directive reinforcing this regulation to maintain security, order, and good governance.<\/p>\n
Explaining the rationale behind the directive, Nwabunwanne mentioned concerns about observed abuses, including the commercialization of chieftaincy titles for financial gain, which, he said, brings traditional institutions into disrepute.<\/p>\n
“We have received confirmed reports that you, as the traditional ruler of Nneni, conferred such a phantom chieftaincy today (Monday) on one Senator Ifeanyi Ubah in violation of the Code of Conduct and without clearance from the ministry,” stated Mr. Nwabunwanne in the letter to the traditional ruler.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
