The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued a public alert (No. 037\/2023) regarding five contaminated syrups circulating in World Health Organization (WHO) regions. The WHO regions affected include America, Eastern Mediterranean, South-East Asia, and Western Pacific. The contaminated oral liquid dosage forms (syrup and suspension) were also found in the Maldives and Pakistan, with some affected products detected in Belize, Fiji, and Lao People\u2019s Democratic Republic.<\/p>\n
The identified syrups are ALERGO Syrup, EMIDONE Suspension, MUCORID Syrup, ULCOFIN Suspension, and ZINCELL Syrup, with a total of 23 batches affected, all manufactured by PHARMIX LABORATORIES (PVT.) LTD (Pakistan).<\/p>\n
The contamination was revealed when samples of ALERGO syrup from five different batches were screened for non-compliance in the Maldives, detecting potentially unacceptable amounts of diethylene glycol and ethylene glycol. Laboratory testing by the Therapeutic Goods Administration of Australia confirmed contamination in all five batches.<\/p>\n
Following an inspection by the Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (DRAP) at PHARMIX LABORATORIES, it was suggested that diethylene glycol\/ethylene glycol contaminants might be present in other products and batches manufactured by the company. DRAP instructed PHARMIX LABORATORIES to halt production of all oral liquid dosage medicines and issued a Recall Alert for the five different oral dosages.<\/p>\n
The Director-General of NAFDAC, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, emphasized the toxic nature of Diethylene Glycol and Ethylene Glycol, which can be fatal when consumed. The toxic effects include abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea, inability to pass urine, headache, altered mental state, and acute kidney injury leading to death.<\/p>\n
As a precautionary measure, manufacturers of liquid dosage forms, particularly syrups containing excipients, are at risk of contamination. Adeyeye warned that the substandard products mentioned in the alert are unsafe, especially for children, and their use may result in serious injury or death.
