The introduction of this online platform aims to streamline and expedite the application process while reducing the need for extensive human interaction.

Outlined below are the five straightforward steps for applying for a passport through the newly unveiled portal:

Step 1: Proceed to the Official Website – Enter NIN Details

Applicants are required to visit the official website passport.immigration.gov.ng and enter their National Identification Number (NIN). The portal will automatically fill in personal data from the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC). Details such as date of birth and an auto-generated captcha will be added to confirm identity.

Step 2: Complete Data Fields on Passport Type

Once the NIN-generated data is completed, applicants will be directed to select the type of passport they are applying for. The options include the state for passport processing, booklet type, and the processing office. The choices made will determine the associated passport fees, with a 5-year, 32-page passport application priced at N35,000, and a 10-year, 64-page passport at N64,000. For Nigerians in the diaspora, fees are set at $142 for a 5-year validity (32 pages) and $242 for a 10-year validity (64 pages).

Step 3: Upload

Passport Photograph and Supporting Documents**

Applicants are instructed to upload passport photographs that adhere to International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards. The specifications include a 2×2 inch image size, adequate brightness and contrast, and a natural skin tone. Additional details are to be filled in on the portal during this step.

Step 4: Walk into an Immigration Office for Biometric Capturing

After completing all online application requirements, applicants are required to visit the selected immigration office for biometric capturing. This step ensures a comprehensive and accurate record of the applicant’s identity.

Step 5: Track Passport Application Process and Pick Up

Upon completing biometric capturing, applicants can track the progress of their passport application using the provided application number and reference number on the immigration portal. The tracking system informs applicants when their passport is ready for pickup at the nearest immigration office.

The Federal Government, through the Ministry of Interior, launched the first online gateway for automated passport applications in Abuja today, marking a significant step toward digital transformation.
