The students emphasize the crucial need for financial support to meet tuition obligations at the Nigerian Law School, facilitating their pursuit of legal careers.

In an open letter expressing their concerns, dated Sunday, January 7, the law students extended their congratulations to Governor Mbah for his recent victory upheld by the Supreme Court, commending his commendable governance. However, the students lamented the lack of response to their prior letters addressed to the governor’s office and the deputy governor.

The students highlight that the sudden surge in tuition fees has jeopardized their dreams of pursuing legal education. Governor Mbah had previously, in October 2023, pledged support for the Nigerian Law School, specifically in the areas of new infrastructure and the rehabilitation of existing dilapidated structures.

The letter, titled ‘Re: Urgent Appeal for Emergency Financial/Bursary Assistance For Enugu State Law School Students,’ and signed by National President Stephen Obiora, National Secretary Ugwuoke Obisike, and National Public Relations Officer Aguoma Uzoamaka, emphasizes that the financial strain poses not only a loss to the students but also to the state at large if swift action is not taken.

The students express their completion of undergraduate studies in Law, standing at the threshold of the final hurdle before joining the ranks of dedicated legal minds serving the state through the Nigerian Law School program. However, they highlight a sudden and significant increase in fees from N296,000 to N476,000, coupled with a severely limited payment window, throwing their aspirations into jeopardy.

The financial burden, compounded by a short deadline, has placed them in a precarious situation, threatening to extinguish the hope cultivated through years of dedicated study. The students stress that denying them access to the Law School due to this sudden financial burden would not only be a personal tragedy but also a significant loss to the Enugu State legal profession, in which Governor Mbah is also a part.

While the students remain silent on their next course of action, they make a desperate plea for the governor to act swiftly and provide them with emergency bursary assistance. They firmly believe that bridging this financial gap with emergency bursary assistance would represent a swift and impactful investment in the future of Enugu State. The statement concludes by humbly appealing to Governor Mbah to consider their plight with the utmost urgency, recognizing it not merely as a request for financial aid but as a plea for an investment in the future of the state.

Students of Enugu State, united under the National Association of Enugu State Law Students, have issued a heartfelt appeal to Governor Peter Mbah, urging him to expedite the approval and disbursement of bursary funds.
