During the Technology Times Thought Leadership Series in Lagos with the theme &#8220;Data Protection and Connected Nigeria, Challenges, Opportunities, and Possibilities,&#8221; NIRA&#8217;s National President, Mr. Adesola Akinsanya, highlighted the critical role of data protection in fostering trust, innovation, and sustainable digital growth.<\/p>\n<p>Akinsanya called for collective efforts, continuous improvement, and the adoption of evolving technologies and best practices to ensure data and privacy protection. Advocacy, awareness campaigns, and education were identified as essential steps in improving Nigeria&#8217;s internet ecosystem. Akinsanya stressed the importance of advocating for stronger data protection policies, raising awareness about privacy rights, and educating users to demand and practice responsible data handling.<\/p>\n<p>Regulatory compliance was also emphasized, with the need for the government to promote compliance with existing data protection laws, enhance enforcement mechanisms, and introduce stricter penalties for non-compliant entities. Continuous innovation, including the adoption of biometric technology, blockchain, and artificial intelligence, holds promising possibilities for the future of data protection in Nigeria&#8217;s internet ecosystem.<\/p>\n<p>Akinsanya highlighted the potential benefits of biometric technology, such as fingerprint and facial recognition, in enhancing data security and authentication processes. Blockchain technology could provide transparent and tamper-resistant data storage, improving data integrity and trust. Additionally, artificial intelligence-driven solutions were identified for identifying and mitigating data breaches, analyzing patterns, and securing data through intelligent algorithms.<\/p>\n<p>Mrs. Adaobi Olaye, Chairperson of Data Privacy Professionals, Nigeria, emphasized the need to prioritize data protection for mobile phones, urging Nigerians to be cautious about divulging their data to data processors. Olaye stressed the importance of data subjects demanding a high level of security to protect their data, encouraging regular data privacy assessments by internet-based companies to identify vulnerabilities, implement safeguards, and stay compliant with data protection regulations.
