This development signals the first gas supply deal between Nigeria and South Africa, demonstrating potential collaboration in the energy sector.

Earlier this year, Riverside LNG entered into a gas-export partnership agreement with Johannes Schuetze Energy Import AG of Germany. In an interview held in Abuja, CEO David Ige expressed the company’s commitment to securing new deals on the continent. Nigeria, with the largest gas reserves in Africa, is positioning itself as a key player in the evolving regional gas market.

“We’d probably very early in the year close out another segment of the market, an off-take for South Africa. There’s a massively evolving gas market in the region, anything around 3,000 nautical miles of Nigeria. So that covers southern Africa, western Africa, all to northwest Europe and to the Caribbean and South America broadly,” said Ige.

While details of the discussions with South African counterparts remain confidential, Ige highlighted the company’s active exploration of potential opportunities in Liberia and Cameroon.

Key Points:

South Africa is currently grappling with persistent power shortages, relying heavily on coal for 80% of its electricity production.

The country aims to shift towards renewable sources and achieve 60 gigawatts of power from renewables by 2030.

South Africa lacks LNG facilities, and deliveries from the Riverside LNG project are expected to start in 2027, providing ample time for the development of import terminal infrastructure.

The Southern African Development Community has endorsed a $17 billion plan for natural gas infrastructure to enhance energy provisions in the region.

David Ige emphasized the significant opportunity for Nigeria to become a trading hub, leveraging its abundant gas reserves to meet the growing demand in the region. The potential gas supply agreement aligns with South Africa’s efforts to diversify its energy sources and address power challenges.

Riverside LNG, a Nigerian-based energy company, has announced ongoing discussions regarding a potential agreement to supply gas to South Africa, with plans to commence deliveries in the first quarter of 2024.
