Governor Hyacinth Alia of Benue State recently appealed to the military high command for intensified efforts to restore “absolute peace” in the state during a meeting at the Defense Headquarters in Abuja. In response, Chief of Defense Staff (CDS) Gen. Christopher Musa stated that steps were being taken to close all Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps and ease IDPs’ return to their homes.<\/p>\n
During a press briefing after the meeting, Governor Alia highlighted the vulnerability of Benue State due to its four local government areas sharing borders with Cameroon. He emphasized the need for military assistance to address security challenges, especially in areas where criminals have taken refuge and in locations where solid minerals have been discovered.<\/p>\n
Governor Alia expressed gratitude for the efforts of the military, particularly Operation Whirl Stroke, which has contributed to relative peace in the state. However, he stressed the desire for more comprehensive security measures to ensure the complete return of normalcy. The governor’s primary focus is to enable IDPs to return to their ancestral farmland and ensure the safety of all citizens.<\/p>\n
“We came to present some more prayer because we want not just relative peace, but absolute peace. The peace in the form that will enable our IDPs return to their ancestral farmland, and for everyone to sleep with their eyes closed,” Governor Alia stated during the briefing.<\/p>\n
He further explained that the recent discovery of solid minerals in the state has added to security challenges. Governor Alia is seeking the establishment of Forward Operation Bases (FOB) in strategic locations to counter criminal activities and secure areas with valuable resources.<\/p>\n
“We want some more to be done. We’re praying for Forward Operation Bases (FOB). Four local government areas share a border with Cameroon. Benue State is one of the very top states with solid minerals, and many more are being discovered.
