The Institute of Peace and Conflict Resolution (IPCR) and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) have urged the government and traditional institutions to prioritize the inclusion of women in every conflict resolution and peace management committee.<\/p>\n
Dr. Joseph Ochogwu, the Director-General of IPCR, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Abuja, made this call during a community dialogue\/training workshop in Akwa Ibom on \u201cStrengthening the Role of Women in Conflict Prevention and Peace Negotiations in Traditional Societies in Southern Nigeria.\u201d He expressed regret that traditional societies are highly patriarchal, preventing women from participating in the conflict resolution process.<\/p>\n
Grace Awodu, representing the Director, emphasized the importance of women’s inclusion in such committees, noting that the earlier traditional institutions recognize this, the better.<\/p>\n
Abdourahamane, represented by Nneka Okafor, Head of Social and Human Sciences at UNESCO Regional Office, Abuja, highlighted that women, despite being victims of conflict and war, are also agents of change. He stated, \u201cIt is only right that women should be actively involved in decision-making processes at all levels, from local community initiatives to high-level peace negotiations.
