The MAC, commissioned by Home Secretary James Cleverly, is undertaking this review as part of a broader effort to reduce net migration by 300,000.

According to The Telegraph, a significant surge has been observed in the number of students granted two-year visas to stay in the UK after graduating in June 2023. The figures indicate an increase of 74%, with over 98,000 students benefiting from this program, raising concerns about its potential misuse.

“There are fears that it is being used as a backdoor route to work in the UK, often in low-skilled jobs, or simply to stay for two years as there is no requirement to take up employment,” The Telegraph reported.

Professor Brian Bell, chairman of the committee, pointed out a crucial aspect of the current system — the lack of specific grade requirements for students. He emphasized the need to evaluate whether it is sensible not to have grade or achievement criteria for graduates.

“There’s no requirement to get particular grades in your university course or anything like that. That’s the question we want to review in the graduate route to think about whether that’s sensible or whether you should have a rule that says you have to achieve a certain grade or a certain kind of achievement in your course,” stated Professor Brian Bell.

The committee is not only focusing on grades but is also considering additional restrictions. Bell mentioned the possibility of limiting foreign students to specific universities or courses. Furthermore, certain types of jobs or activities may face constraints under the proposed review.

“We would also investigate whether there should be further restrictions that would only allow foreign students to stay in the UK if they went to certain universities or completed specified courses. Also, certain types of jobs or activities could also be subject to limitations,” added Bell.

As the MAC deliberates on these potential changes, the implications for foreign students, particularly those from Nigeria, are significant. The outcome of this review could shape the future landscape of UK immigration policies, with a potential impact on educational and professional opportunities for international graduates.

The United Kingdom’s Migration Advisory Committee (MAC) is reportedly mulling over the possibility of deporting foreign students, including those from Nigeria, who fail to achieve high grades on their two-year graduate visas.
