In Nigeria, however, this festive period brings a mix of both joyous and troubling trends, with exorbitant food prices, an alarming increase in ritual killings, and a decline in decorum among the youth.

A recent visit by Abuja City Journal to Nyanya market on December 14 provided insights into the experiences of both buyers and traders, shedding light on these concerning phenomena.

Mallam Adamu Jos, the vice Chairman of the chicken sellers association in Nyanya market, revealed that the cost of local chicken has skyrocketed, ranging from N6000 to N7000, depending on size. Broilers, on the other hand, now fetch prices between N8000 and N12000. Adamu attributed this surge to the high cost of feeds, the Christmas rush, and the removal of subsidies, which has significantly impacted transportation costs.

Nkiruka, known as Nwanyi Tomatoes, shared her perspective as a seller of Derika UTC Jos tomatoes. She highlighted the challenges faced during the Yuletide, where a basket of tomatoes now costs N15,000. Smaller plates of tomatoes, which were previously sold for N200, now range between N400 and N500.

Wilfred, a rice dealer, expressed his concerns about the rising cost of transporting rice to his store. He revealed an increase in transportation fees from N500 to N1500 per bag within the metropolis, primarily attributing it to subsidy removal. Despite a decrease in the cost of rice itself, with Big Bull dropping from N51,000 to N48,000 and Mama’s Pride decreasing from N48,000 to N46,000, the overall expenses for traders have surged.

As the Yuletide season unfolds, Christians around the world prepare for the traditional Christmas celebration, commemorating the birth of Jesus Christ on the 25th of December.
