MTN Group Chief Technology and Information Officer (CTIO) Mazen Mroue emphasized the potential of Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite connectivity to enhance network resilience and bridge connectivity gaps in remote areas. The group is gearing up for satellite trials across its African footprint in collaboration with various providers.<\/p>\n

Key Highlights:<\/strong><\/p>\n

  1. Upcoming trials include pilots with Lynk Global in Ghana and MTN’s home market, South Africa.<\/li>\n
  2. Discussions are underway with AST SpaceMobile for tests in Nigeria and South Sudan, while engagements with Starlink involve “enterprise-grade” trials in Rwanda and Nigeria.<\/li>\n
  3. MTN is also in talks with Eutelsat OneWeb for another planned pilot in South Africa.<\/li>\n
  4. The assessments cover both direct-to-device connectivity and standard satellite services, with the latter aimed at providing backhaul and supporting fixed enterprise deployments.<\/li>\n
  5. The trials are part of MTN’s commitment to narrowing the digital divide, enriching lives, and empowering the communities it serves.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Proof-of-Concept and Collaborations:<\/strong><\/p>\n

    • MTN has already completed a proof-of-concept with Lynk Global in a remote village in Liberia, demonstrating that a standard device could receive an SMS message 25km away from the nearest standard coverage.<\/li>\n
    • Collaborations include discussions with Omnispace to explore the use of its non-terrestrial network.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
